Applications and Features of Vibrating Screens in the Carbon Black Industry

In the carbon black industry, since carbon black is relatively lightweight (with a specific gravity of around 0.2), conventional vibration screens like linear vibrators are not ideally suited for this material. For coarse filtration or secondary processing, rotary or ultrasonic vibrating screens can be used; however, for advanced deep-processing applications, an air-classifying separator is the preferred choice.

I. Basic Knowledge About Carbon Black

Carbon black is composed of carbon and is typically classified as an inorganic pigment. It appears as a black, powdery substance formed through the incomplete combustion or pyrolysis of hydrocarbons in the gas phase. Depending on the production process and specific process conditions, carbon black can be tailored to exhibit a wide range of properties. In general, carbon black particles are not isolated but instead exist in interconnected clusters, with multiple particles linked together via layers of carbon crystals, forming a chain-like structure. The particle size of carbon black varies significantly depending on the manufacturing process: for instance, carbon black produced via the furnace method tends to yield coarser particles, while those made using the gas-phase method result in finer, more refined products.

Among these, fumed silica is a general term for white, powder-like X-ray amorphous silicates and silicate products, primarily referring to precipitated silica, fumed silica, ultrafine silica gel, and aerogels. It also includes powdered synthetic aluminum silicates and calcium silicates. Precipitated silica is mainly used as a reinforcing agent for both natural and synthetic rubber, as well as a friction agent in toothpaste. Fumed silica, on the other hand, is predominantly employed as a reinforcing additive for silicone rubber, along with thickening agents for coatings and unsaturated resins. Meanwhile, ultrafine silica gel and aerogels are widely utilized as matting agents in coatings, thickeners, and release agents for plastic films, among other applications.

II. Vibrating Screens Used in the Carbon Black Industry

Carbon black particle size can be as low as 5 nm, thanks to the screening process required during its production. Generally speaking, carbon black vibrating screens feature: 1. High screening efficiency, with a separation accuracy exceeding 95%; 2. Compact size, lightweight design, simple installation, and easy maintenance; 3. Adjustable discharge port positions—controllable within a 360° range—for convenient process layout; 4. Convenient screen mesh replacement, making them ideal for both dry and wet material classification tasks; 5. Fully enclosed design that eliminates dust pollution; 6. By adjusting the phase angle of the motor’s eccentric rotor, the movement trajectory of materials on the screen surface can be altered, optimizing the classification of even challenging-to-screen materials.
