Rice husk ash precipitated silica is expected to become a viable alternative to traditionally produced precipitated silica.

According to assessments by market consulting firms, global demand for precipitated silica reached 3.1 million tons in 2023; among these, the tire industry accounted for the largest share—approximately 37% of total demand—while non-tire rubber products made up 28%. With growing environmental awareness, a new sustainable alternative—precipitated silica derived from rice husk ash—is gradually gaining attention.

According to a research report, demand for highly dispersible precipitated silica is projected to grow at an annual rate of approximately 7% from 2022 to 2027. This type of highly dispersible precipitated silica helps reduce tire rolling resistance and enhances tire grip, creating promising growth opportunities for the tire industry. Meanwhile, demand in tires and rubber-based mechanical products is expected to increase by 4.9% and 3.8%, respectively.

It's worth noting that rice husk ash Precipitated Silica, as an eco-friendly and sustainably developed innovative product, is emerging as a promising alternative to traditional precipitation-based Precipitated Silica—and is attracting increasing attention. This trend is particularly evident in the tire industry.

Additionally, industry sources highlight that major domestic producers of precipitated silica using the precipitation method—and some agricultural product suppliers—have emerged as key players in this space. Currently, several global companies are either building or planning to build rice husk ash-based precipitated silica projects. Meanwhile, several traditional precipitated silica manufacturers are expected to introduce this new product line in the near future. These newly launched projects will not only strengthen the global supply capacity of rice husk ash precipitated silica but also contribute to the sustainable growth of the tire and other rubber products industries.

However, despite the advantages of rice husk ash precipitated silica, it still faces limitations in meeting the tire industry's growing demand for sustainable fillers. For instance, production facilities for rice husk ash precipitated silica must be located close to rice-growing regions to keep transportation costs manageable. Meanwhile, rising industry demand for rice husks could also drive up their prices. As a result, striking the right balance between ensuring a stable supply of rice husks and maintaining cost efficiency will become one of the key challenges shaping the future development of the rice husk ash precipitated silica market.
